Some 250 people came to get flu vaccine during the Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP) Coalition’s 2008-2009 Flu Kick-Off Event on Friday, October 3, 2008. The flu vaccine clinic and press conference was held from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Malcom X Library on Market Street in San Diego. The clinic offered free flu vaccine for people aged 18 years and older. The press conference, which took place at 11:30 a.m., featured remarks from the following speakers:
- Teresa Newman, MSN FNP, Chair CHIP Immunize San Diego; Scripps Healthcare
- Wilma J. Wooten, MD, MPH, Public Health Officer, County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency
- Josef B. Zwass, MD, FAAP, Pediatrician, Kaiser Permanente
- Syvera Hardy, RN, Public Relations Chairperson for San Diego Black Nurses Association
- Mark H. Sawyer, MD, Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, UC San Diego School of Medicine; Medical Director, UC San Diego, San Diego Immunization Partnership; Currently serving on the Centers for Disease Control’s Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices
The event was well-covered by the media, with representatives from CW, Univision, KGTV, KUSI, Radio Latina and the newspaper Enlace.
In addition to getting flu vaccine, attendees could sign up for the San Diego Regional Immunization Registry (SDIR), a computerized database of immunization records, to enable people and their doctors to keep track of their immunizations.
