GOAL: To promote increased use of
pertussis vaccine, specifically using the Tdap (Tetanus,
diphtheria and pertussis) booster vaccine, by providing
information and education to healthcare providers, school
staff and the community.
Strategy: Vaccination Services
Objective: Increase the number of
eligible persons who have received the Tdap booster shot.
Accomplishments:
-
In
2010, 15,491
doses of Tdap vaccine were given at Public Health Centers
and community sites at various locations around the
County.
-
During
2011, Public Health Centers gave 19,695
doses of the vaccine.
-
Tdap
vaccine continues to be available at County Public Health
Centers.
-
From
August 2010 through September 2011, more than 15,000 doses
were given at community-based and school sites.
Strategy: Outreach to Health Care Providers
Objective: Increase awareness among health care providers about offering Tdap
vaccine to all eligible patients, including adolescents
entering 7-12th grades at school (the new Tdap
vaccine school entry requirement).
Accomplishments:
-
Used the California Health Alert Network (a special messaging
service which reaches an estimated 3,000 providers in San
Diego) to distribute information about the pertussis
outbreak in 2010, stressing the need for widespread Tdap
vaccination.
-
Reached an estimated 4,000 physicians via San Diego County
Medical Society and another 450 through the local chapter
of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
-
Sent informational messages to health care organizations,
hospitals and community health centers.
-
Conducted trainings for private providers about the new school
requirement, and proper documentation of the shot for
parents.

Strategy: Implementation of AB354
Objective: Conduct
trainings and provide informational materials to local school
districts and providers about AB354 and SB614.
Accomplishments:
-
Trained school health staff in new requirement, how to implement
it and how to assess students’ immunization records to
check Tdap booster shot
status. From
March, 2011 through March, 2012, there have been 140
trainings of school health staff and private providers
with more than 1,600 persons trained.
-
Used e-mail, telephone and face-to-face contact to keep
stakeholders updated on developments with requirements and
implementation, as well as other relevant information.
-
More than 1,100 emails have been sent to private health care
providers and their staffs, school districts, private
schools and pharmacies.
-
Distributed supplies to help school staff implement requirement,
including 208,040 stickers to document Tdap on school
immunization records and 3,322 personal belief forms to
public schools. Also, 13,360 stickers and 849 personal
belief forms were supplied to private schools.
-
Responded to more than 1,000
phone calls from parents, public and private schools about
AB354, and made more than 350 calls, all in the same time
period.

Outreach
Objectives:
Promote new school requirement for Tdap
and Promote
Tdap vaccine to all family members of newborns to protect them
from pertussis (known as “cocooning”).
Accomplishments:
-
Provided trainings on the new requirement to healthcare workers
in the Hispanic community.
-
Maintained extensive public awareness campaign, including
81 news
releases (40 in 2010, 34 in 2011 and 7 to date in 2012) and
2 press conferences to promote compliance with
the new requirement.
-
Provided trainings to WIC
(Women, Infants and Children) Program, which is a
supplemental nutrition program for mothers in need of
assistance in providing food for their children.
