National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) 2017

Everyone—from babies to seniors and everyone in between— needs immunizations to help protect against serious diseases. August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), and the County Immunization Program wants to remind everyone to make sure they have the shots they need.

Immunizations are one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th Century. Shots help prevent serious diseases like whooping cough, measles and flu. To find out which shots you and your family needs and when to get them, talk to your doctor. Also, see the websites listed below for more information.

Babies need shots at birth, 2, 4, 6, and 12-15 months to protect against 14 serious diseases like measles, whooping cough and flu. Older children, preteens and teens also need vaccine protection from diseases, and some shots are required before child care and school entry.

And, shots aren’t just for kids. Adults need protection from diseases like meningococcal disease, pneumonia and whooping cough. Pregnant women should get Tdap vaccine in the 3rd trimester of every pregnancy, to help protect them and their babies from whooping cough. And everyone age 6 months and older needs a seasonal flu shot every year.

NIAM is divided into four themes, each one week long:

Week 1 (July 31-Aug. 6): Babies and Young Children: A Healthy Start Begins With On-Time Vaccinations

Week 2: (Aug. 7-13): Pregnant Women: Protect Yourself And Pass Protection On To Your Baby

Week 3: (Aug. 14-20): Adults: Vaccines are not just for kids

Week 4: (Aug. 21-27):
Preteens and Teens: Ensure A Healthy Future With Vaccines

Each theme corresponds to a different age group. By focusing on different ages, National Immunization Awareness Month reminds us that all ages need immunizations to help protect them from vaccine-preventable diseases.

You only need to turn on the TV news, open a newspaper or check out your favorite news website to see stories about vaccine preventable diseases making people very sick, in San Diego, in California, and throughout the US. In some cases, the diseases are fatal.

In a fully immunized community, everyone benefits. Immunization helps keep us and our community healthy, including those most vulnerable to vaccine-preventable diseases. When a community is fully immunized, these diseases have less chance to spread and infect persons who cannot get immunized because of age (such as very young babies) or health condition (such as, in some cases, people with suppressed immune systems).

Immunizations help prevent disease and can save lives. Find out more information about immunizations and the diseases they protect against by visiting the websites listed below:
